How much does a website cost in Australia?
Real price ranges for small business websites in Australia, what pushes the price up, and the costs people forget to budget for.

The short version
We get asked this every week, so here are honest numbers. These are typical ranges we see across the Australian market, not our price list.
- DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace): a few hundred dollars a year, plus your time
- Template site built by a freelancer: roughly $1,500 to $4,000
- Custom small business site with copy and SEO: roughly $5,000 to $15,000
- Ecommerce or larger custom builds: $15,000 and up
What actually drives the price
Page count matters less than people think. The big variables are how much of the content we write for you, whether the design is custom or adapted from a template, and what the site has to connect to. A booking system, a CRM or a product catalogue adds real work.
The second big one is SEO setup. A site that launches with proper page structure, redirects from your old URLs and schema markup costs more upfront. It also doesn’t lose your rankings the week it goes live, which is a very expensive way to save $1,000.
The costs people forget
Hosting, domain renewals, software licences, security updates and the small changes you’ll want every month. Some agencies bundle these into a care plan. Others leave you to work it out after launch.
How to compare quotes
Ask each agency what’s included in writing: copy, images, number of design rounds, SEO setup, redirects, training and what happens after launch. Two quotes for “a website” can describe completely different projects.

Frequently asked questions
Why do website quotes vary so much?
Because they often include very different work. One quote may include copywriting, SEO setup and training, while another only covers building pages you supply.
Is a $500 website worth it?
It can work for a hobby or a placeholder. For a business that relies on enquiries, you usually end up paying again to fix speed, copy and SEO.
Do I pay for a website upfront?
Most agencies split payment into a deposit and milestone payments. Ongoing hosting and care is usually monthly.
