How to choose a web design agency (without regretting it)
Questions to ask, red flags to watch for and how to compare web design agencies in Australia before you sign.

Start with results, not looks
A beautiful portfolio tells you the agency can design. It doesn’t tell you whether those sites bring in enquiries. Ask for examples in your industry and what changed after launch.
Questions worth asking
- Who owns the domain, the code and the content?
- Is the quote fixed, and what exactly is included?
- How do you handle SEO and redirects from my current site?
- Who will I actually deal with day to day?
- What does support look like after launch, and what does it cost?
Red flags
- The agency registers your domain in its own name
- You can’t get admin access to your own website
- Long contracts with exit fees
- Vague promises like “page one guaranteed”
- No mention of tracking or how they measure success
Fit matters
The best agency for a national retailer probably isn’t the best one for a two-van plumbing business. Look for a team that understands your customers and talks in plain English.
Our honest take
Pick the agency that asks the most questions about your business before quoting. The ones that quote in five minutes are usually selling a template.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose a local web design agency?
Local helps if you want to meet in person and value local market knowledge, but results and fit matter more than postcode.
How many quotes should I get?
Two or three is enough. More than that and you’ll compare prices rather than value.
What should be in a web design contract?
Scope, timeline, payment milestones, ownership, what happens after launch and how either side can end the arrangement.
